Music Department Scholarships
Music scholarships are highly competitive, and are awarded at amounts up to $10,000 for each of four consecutive years. You must be a Music Major to be considered for a music scholarship; for students intending to major in another area, we offer Ensemble Grants. These are awarded to students who show the potential to positively contribute to our vocal and/or instrumental ensembles. If you are interested in any of our scholarship offerings, simply follow the Audition Checklist at the top of this page.
Students who are awarded a Music Scholarship will be notified by April 1, 2008.

Audition Requirements
Accompanist
If you wish to perform with an accompanist, one will be made available to you at no cost. When you schedule your audition, please inform us that you would like to take advantage of that opportunity. You may also bring your own accompanist.
Voice
Please prepare two contrasting pieces for voice; one in Italian, French, or German, and a second in English. The two pieces should highlight different historical periods, tempos, and/or styles. In addition, please bring a letter of recommendation from a private voice instructor or musical director. You will be asked to sing scales, sight-read, and/or repeat interval patterns and melodic sequences to determine competency for theory placement. Please bring three extra copies of your music for the Music Department faculty (photocopies are fine). These will be returned to you after your audition.
Students who wish to major in Vocal Performance will also be asked to submit a complete repertoire list, an updated resume of performance experience, and a summary of foreign languages studied in school.
Woodwinds, Brass, Strings
Please prepare at least two excerpts from the standard repertoire for your instrument; one to demonstrate technical proficiency, and one to highlight expressive, lyrical playing. You may choose two movements from the same piece, or two different works. You will also be asked to play selected major scales, up to four sharps/flats, and sight-read. Please bring three extra copies of your music for the Music Department faculty (photocopies are fine). These will be returned to you after your audition.
Percussion
Please prepare one selection on all of following instruments: 1. snare drum; 2. mallets (marimba, xylophone, or vibraphone); 3. timpani; 4. drum set (if you intend to participate in one of our jazz ensembles). You may also be asked to demonstrate proficiency on standard snare drum rudiments and/or sight-read. Please bring three extra copies of your music for the Music Department faculty (photocopies are fine). These will be returned to you after your audition.
Piano
Since the piano literature is so vast, the piano faculty posts this
list only as a guideline. Students and teachers should choose
repertoire that represents their accomplishments and experience
accurately and to advantage. Memorization is suggested but not
required. A working knowledge of scales and arpeggios is always
helpful.
Choose two contrasting pieces from two of the following groups for a maximum playing time of ten minutes:
- A work of J.S. Bach or a Sonata of Scarlatti
- A movement from a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven)
- A 19th-century piece (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, etc.)
- An Impessionistic piece (Debussy or Ravel) or representative 20th Century piece (Bartok, Kabalevsky, Prokofiev, etc.)
Students interested in the performance major should prepare three contrasting pieces from three of the above groups for a maximum playing time of fifteen minutes. Memorization is expected.
