Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the premier wind and percussion ensemble at the University of Indianapolis.
The ensemble presents multiple concerts each semester, with each designed to reflect great variety and a high level of
musicianship. Musical repertoire includes highly regarded original band works as well as select transcriptions of orchestral
repertoire; recent programs have included the music of Warren Benson, Percy Grainger, Karel Husa, Felix Mendelssohn, William Schuman, John
Philip Sousa, and Frank Ticheli. In February, 2008, the group will host the eighth annual Festival of Winds & Percussion,
a one-day honor band which is open to all high school students in Indiana and surrounding states.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble also serves as the laboratory ensemble for the annual University of Indianapolis Instrumental Conducting Workshop, and has worked in that setting with notable guest clinicians such as Craig Kirchhoff, Mallory Thompson, Jerry Junkin, and Eugene M. Corporon. This year, Professor Rodney Winther, Director of Wind Studies at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, will serve as the guest clinician for that event. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble recently performed at the Indiana Music Educators Association State Convention and, in May of 2005, undertook a nine-day tour of Austria.
Auditions for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble are held three days before the beginning of classes in the fall semester, and are open to all interested students. The group meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:15 p.m., and is conducted by UIndy Director of Bands, Dr. James Spinazzola.
