Symphonic Wind Ensemble
Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the premier wind and percussion ensemble at the University of Indianapolis. The ensemble presents multiple concerts each semester, with each designed to reflect great variety and a high level of musicianship. Musical repertoire includes highly regarded original band works as well as select transcriptions of orchestral repertoire; recent programs have included the music of Warren Benson, Aaron Copland, Percy Grainger, Karel Husa, John Mackey, Felix Mendelssohn, William Schuman, Dmitri Shostakovich, John Philip Sousa, and Frank Ticheli.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble also serves as the laboratory ensemble for the annual University of Indianapolis Instrumental Conducting Workshop, and has worked in that setting with notable guest clinicians such as Eugene M. Corporon, Craig Kirchhoff, Jerry Junkin, Allan McMurray, Mallory Thompson, and Rodney Winther. This year, Professor Gary Hill, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Arizona State University, will serve as the guest clinician for that event. In May, 2010, the ensemble will embark on its second international tour; destinations will include the following cities in Italy and Austria: Bologna, Florence, Rome, Venice, Verona, Salzburg, and Vienna.
In addition to its regular concerts, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble hosts two workshops for high school students: the ISSMA/All-State Audition Workshop (November), and the Festival of Winds & Percussion (February), a one-day honor band. Both events are open to all high school students in Indiana and surrounding states.
Auditions for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble are held three days before the beginning of classes in the fall semester, and are open to all interested students. The group meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons from 4:00 5:15 p.m., and is conducted by Dr. James Spinazzola.
