Auditions
Many of us see the word "Audition" and we become paralyzed with fear. Don't be! We ask all prospective members to audition for two reasons:
- to convey the importance of the personal commitment of membership, and
- to allow the music director to meet with each new member privately in order to determine the best way to use their voice.
If you have already auditioned for the music director and have participated in subsequent Choral Union concerts it is not necessary to reaudition.
What goes on in a Choral Union audition? First, you'll be invited to show off your singing ability. For some of us that means singing My Country Tis of Thee or the Star Spangled Banner. For others it will be singing French, German, or Italian art songs, or perhaps something from Handel's Messiah or an opera aria. The whole idea is to let the music director hear you singing something that you're comfortable with. We have accompanists available at each audition.
Next you'll be invited to demonstrate whatever your ability is to read music. You may also be asked to try other pitch and rhythm exercises all of which are designed to help the music director know how best to use your voice.
The whole process takes no more than ten or fifteen minutes and, we can promise you, it's painless!
