Summer Piano Camp II

Ages 13–18
July 6 - July 10, 2009
Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, University of Indianapolis
9:00 A.M.– 5:00 P.M. (commuters)
Commuters are invited to join the group activities in the evening with the residents.

Purpose:

  • To expand private piano lesson instruction with classes of different disciplines in music.
  • To inspire and equip highly motivated and dedicated students in the community to reach their full potential as musicians.
  • To offer students a holistic curriculum and musical experiences to develop the discipline and skills needed to continue their training at a higher and artistic level.
  • To have a great time and meet new friends

Course of Study:

  • Piano ensemble coaching
  • Piano/violin or piano/flute duo workshop for advanced pianists
  • Private lessons/interactive masterclasses
  • Sightplaying workshop
  • Dalcroze Eurhythmics (study of musicianship through movement)

  • Hamburg Steinway and Bösendorfer concert grand pianos in the acoustically superb, Viennese-style Ruth Lilly Performance Hall
  • State-of-the-art Roland digital piano laboratory and Kawai/Macintosh
    computer /keyboard laboratory
  • Period instruments (Harpsichord of the Baroque period and the fortepiano of the Classical/Early Romantic period)

Admissions and Student Expectation:

This camp is open to students who wish to reach their potential as pianists. Students are taught by professional musicians and University faculty. Students are divided into smaller groups, based on age and ability. A letter of recommendation from the piano teacher is required. Students who are accepted will receive ensemble pieces at the end of May for preparation. All students must bring at least one polished piece to share (memory optional) in a masterclass and one or more semi-polished piece(s) for lessons. Students are expected to practice the materials and ideas they have learned after each day of camp in order to be ready for the final recital. Theory placement tests will be held during the first day of camp. The recital will be held Friday, July 10 at 3 p.m., in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center.
