Featured Faculty
Steven Rickards, codirector of VAI, has received international acclaim as one of America's finest countertenors. He sings and teaches internationally and has earned advanced degrees from Indiana University and Florida State University.
Penny Jenkins codirector of VAI, has built an international reputation as a singing teacher and prepares students for Oxford Cambridge choral scholarships. She has broadcast for the BBC, worked in film and TV as a voice coach, and has sun Opera and Oratorio in the U.K. and Europe.
Dr. Kathleen Hacker In addition to her duties as chair of the Music Department and director of Vocal Studies at UIndy, Dr. Kathleen Hacker, has an eclectic international singing career. She holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Indiana University.
Doug King, stage director, choreographer, has worked extensively as an actor throughout the US and Canada. Doug works nationally with high school and college groups. Most of his current work can be seen at Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre in Indianapolis.
Maureen Walton, piano, is an accompanist and music coordinator at the Center for Performing and Visual Arts at Broad Ripple High School, where she is also an instructor of voice and piano. She performs with many Indianapolis-based organizations including the Indianapolis Symphony.
Daniel C. Blosser,is an active conductor, singer, and educator in Indiana and throughout the Midwest. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Masterworks Chorale in Muncie, IN and teaches at Bulter University and the University of Indianapolis. Mr. Blosser has also soloed with several regional orchestras. He received his MM in Choral Conducting from Indiana University and his BM in Music Education from the University of Indianapolis.
Frank Van Atta is pursuing his Master's Degree in Choral Conducting at the Temple University Boyer College of Music. He serves as director of music at the United Methodist Church of Bala Cynwyd. He has received degrees in Choral Music Education and Organ Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Nathan Medley,countertenor and pedagogue, graduated from Oberlin conservatory with degrees in voice and historical performance. He appears frequently with early music ensembles and teaches a thriving studio UIndy and Marian University.
Scott Kane is a staff accompanist for the UIndy and in that capacity has accompanied students of Roy Samuelsen, Kathleen Hacker, Mitzi Westra and Mark Gilgallon. At UIndy he is also adjunct faculty teaching private and class paino. He has been involved with Tarkington Civic Theatre in singing actors' classes and productions of Wizard of Oz, Carousel, Annie, Cabaret, Willy Wonka, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoast. He has ten years of experience as a church music director. In this position, amoong other things, he arranged music for, accompanied and directed the sanctuary choir.
Alan Montgomery was born and raised in Indiana. Dr. Montgomery coached opera for 32 Years at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He has also conducted over 40 musicals, having written three of them himself. He was for a while on the regular staff of the High School Vocal Institute at the University of Indianapolis. He wrote a well‐received book entitled: Opera Coaching, Professional Techniques and Considerations, published by Routledge. Dr. Montgomery has also published one novel ‐ The Further Adventures and Life of Jack Dawkins, also known as The Artful Dodger, published by Trafford Press of Bloomington.
