Accreditations and Affiliations

The National Association of Schools of Music has been designated by the US Department of Education as the agency responsible for the accreditation of all music curricula. NASM cooperates with NCATE and the six regional associations in the process of accreditation. Membership in the Association signifies accreditation and is voluntary. The University of Indianapolis is a member of NASM with its regular ten-year accreditation visit by NASM occurring last in October 1997. The Commission on Accreditation voted "to continue the institution in good standing" at its June, 1998 meeting with the following commendations:

"The Commission commends the institution for…consistent, continuous development of a high- quality music program."

Professional Organizations

Music education students are encouraged to affiliate with the student chapter of Music Educators National Conference. Faculty advisor for this group is Dr. Brenda Clark. A reduced student membership fee and state convention registration fee as well as subscription to the national Music Educators Journal and state Musicator are special advantages.

All music students are eligible for membership in Mu Phi Epsilon, international professional music fraternity, upon successful completion of one semester of Music Theory and a cumulative grade-point average of "B". This organization fosters service through music and has many scholarship opportunities. The Beta Psi Chapter, currently in its 36th year, founded in 1969, celebrated its 25th anniversary on this campus in 1994. Faculty advisor for this group is Dr. Rebecca Sorley.
