Harry Miedema
From 1976 to 1997, Harry Miedema
played saxophone with, and was Musical Director for, EMI
recording artists, the O’JAYS, receiving a Gold Record
in 1991 for the album “Emotionally Yours” and
in 1995 a Platinum Record for “Father and Son” (Gerald
and Eddie Levert). Miedema has made appearances with them
on the NBC Today Show, VH1 “Hard Rock Live,” UPN
Network “Vibe” produced by Quincy Jones, Oprah, "Live
at Hammersmith Odeon" on BBC, and Sinbad's Summer
Jam. He received performance and music education degrees
from Indiana University and studied jazz with David Baker.
He is the author of “Jazz Styles and Analysis: Alto
Saxophone.” He has published compositions and arrangements
with FJH Music. Miedema has been associated with the University
of Indianapolis since 1985. He is Director of Jazz Studies
and has started several community programs including the
Circle City High School Jazz Band, the High School
Jazz Festival, the Jazz Conductor's Seminar, and both the
Circle City Jazz Combo Camp and Big Band Camp. He is the
past president of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation.
His professional jazz sextet, Deep 6, released its first CD, I'll Never Stop Loving You, in January of 2003. Deep 6 has appeared at the Indy Jazz Fest, Penrod, Animals And All That Jazz, the Columbus Jazz Fest, and appears regularly at jazz venues in central Indiana. He is the first call saxophonist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. His radio show, “How Jazz Works”, can be heard on WICR, Saturdays at 9:00pm.
