Performances

Both performing and listening to artist performances are a vital part of a musical education at the University of Indianapolis. Students perform as soloist in Departmental Recitals every semester and in Junior and Senior Recitals during those respective years. Students also perform every semester in large and small ensembles, and regularly have the opportunity to perform with Maestro Raymond Leppard, Conductor Emeritus of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and University of Indianapolis Artist-in-Residence.

Other performance opportunities include materclasses and workshops by internationally known clinicians, composers, conductors, and performers. Distinguished guests have included Frank Battisti, conductor; Elizabeth Mannion, soprano; Edmund Battersby, piano; Bart Kuijken, flute (Netherlands); Kate Brown, Music Drama (England); George Mannesis, piano (Greece); John Corigliano, composer; Donald Freund, composer; Richard Soloman, clarinet, and many others.

Various ensembles do regional recruitment tours annually with occasional European tours. The Concert Choir has traveled to England & Scotland, the Netherlands and throughout Western Europe. The Concert Band has traveled to Greece and toured Austria in 2005.

It is important for students to see and hear their teachers in performance. The Faculty Artist Series provides the opportunity for all applied faculty to perform solo and chamber music throughout the school year on Monday evenings. Numerous members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra teach and perform at University of Indianapolis.

Collaborations with local artists and organizations have brought other extraordinary performances to the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall. The Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra is in its 6th year as an ensemble-in-residence. The New Century String Quartet has been in residence since 2000.

Collaborations have also occurred with Suzuki and Friends, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Brass Ensemble, Ensemble Music Society, Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, Indianapolis Opera Ensemble, Circle City Sound (barbershop), The Wright Brothers, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, International Violin Competition, and more.
